The University of Ibadan Student Union Health Advisory Committee released a memo on the 4th of August, confirming  a medical case on campus, identified as human botfly larvae, this was discovered from students who were usually presented with skin swelling  and discomfort. The  Union Advisory Committee adviced the entire students to be aware of these cases, stating that these cases are under control as the infected students are being treated properly.

According to The Union Health Advisory Committee, they said ‘Human botfly infestation, also known as myiasis, occurs when the larva of the botfly penetrates human skin, often causing painful, boil-like swellings.’

And these unfriendly larvae can be introduced to the skin through the bites of vector insects, particularly mosquitoes, which unknowingly carry botfly eggs. They created awareness by mentioning symptoms to look out for, from the human botfly infestation which includes, painful or itchy swelling resembling a boil, possible pus or fluid discharge, etc.

Though the symptoms are known, the Committee also included the measures to be taken such as,  use of insect repellent regularly especially at night during night reading, avoid sleeping outdoors, maintain good hygiene and ensure rooms are free from stagnant water and insect breeding sites, which is very important to remain healthy. The committee ended the memo by wishing each and everyone to stay vigilant and informed as health is a collective responsibility of all.
