MODESTY IN FASHION
rBy OMODELE Goodness
Modesty in fashion is a principle that needs to be paid attention to once again. The idea of bold expression and freedom of choice, in relation to fashion, has blinded many and given room for opportunity to put on so-called ‘clothes’ that reveal and outline body parts that are called ‘private’ for a reason.
Modesty, according to Wikipedia, is a mode of dressing which tends to avoid the encouragement of sexual attraction. In other words, it means wearing clothes that cover key parts of the body such as shoulders, knees, chest, stomach etc without being overly tight in the name of dressing feminine. As opposed to the trends of today's fashion, you don't need to wear clothes that expose the size of your nipples and buttline, neither do you need to expose the colour of your laps and cleavages to show off your beauty. Modest fashion is still very much able to announce the beauty of a person as it did in the ancient era.
As much as people are of the opinion that outfits that show off some skin are stylish and attractive, modest dressing are more elegant, elevating and offer more benefits such as:
Enhanced comfort through its breathable fabrics that allow easy movements.
Elegance through its classic designs that are never out of style. They can also be worn to any setting without feeling out of place.
Reduced objectification: Since these outfits cover more of the body, they help reduce the sexualization and objectification ladies face in the society.
Modest outfits can be worn in different ways, accessorized and layered with other items to create different appearance for different occasions. They also offer a more professional look.
Certain things to consider when going for modest dressing are as follows:
The Right Fabric: It's Important to avoid transparent, thin, and clingy fabric. But rather go for fabrics such as wool, linen, silk, chiffon and cotton etc.
Appropriate Length: Skirts and dresses should ideally fall below the knee, while tops should cover the shoulders and reach the waist or hips. Clothes higher necklines are also more appropriate. But in the case of crop tops, shirt or sweatshirts, it can be paired with a high waist skirt or trouser to avoid revealing the skin.
Layering: Layering is a unique technique to achieve modest dressing without compromising on style. Use cardigans, blazers, jacket, vest and undershirts not only add coverage to your outfits but also interest to your looks. For instance, long-sleeved turtle neck can be paired with sleeveless jacket to avoid outlining the busts.
Complementary Accessories: Adding accessories like jewleries, belt, scarves, hat or cap to one's outfit gives it an interesting look.
In light of all that has been said, essential wardrobe needed to dress modest include the following:
-Maxi or midi skirts and dresses with different colours and designs.
-High neck tops in form of delicate or bold colours.
-Maxi cardigans, blazers and jackets that come in neutral colours.
-Loose or wide-leg trousers.
Modesty in fashion goes beyond just covering the body, it is a way of dignifying oneself and achieving elegance alongside comfort.
