On April 17, 2025, the University of Ibadan, Students’ Union (UI’SU), released an official statement addressing the ongoing strike by the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN). According to the memo, the UI’SU acknowledged the resilience and patience of the medical and dental students during this prolonged strike.
Subsequent to the meeting held on the 16th of April, 2025, by the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA) and University of Ibadan Association of Dental Students (UADS), the UI’SU stated that they acknowledged the effect of the strike on clinical students, and how it has taken both an academic and emotional toll on them.
The letter, which was signed by the President and General Secretary, stated that, based on the agreements reached at the meeting, a peaceful demonstration would be held on the 23rd of April, 2025, if the strike persists.
“In line with the collective position reached at the meeting, and if the strike remains unsuspended, the Students' Union expresses its full and unwavering solidarity with UIMSA and UADS to embark on a peaceful demonstration by Wednesday, 23rd April, 2025.”
The UI’SU urged the relevant authorities to give precedence to this resolution and acknowledge the disruption the ongoing strike has on the students. The UI’SU noted how they remained committed to the academic interests and welfare of the students, expressing openness to a discussion and a prompt action towards a lasting resolution.
