UISRC Approves ₦1000 Increment in Basic Dues

On the 7th of April, 2025, the Students Representative Council (SRC), held its second emergency virtual meeting where they deliberated on the google form results.

The meeting which commenced at 6:15 PM, had in attendance members of the SRC from various Halls and Faculties, and other concerned members.

Following the submission of the poll results, a motion to increase the basic dues was put forward, igniting debates among some members who challenged the significance of the poll results. 

Rt. Hon. Shoge Quadri, the speaker, stated that different constituencies had different votes indicating discrepancy in the poll results among constituencies. 

In view of the arguments, The Speaker ordered the Chief Whip, Hon. Oluwagbemisola, to do a compilation of the poll results. After compilation, it was noted that a total of 1,177 polls were in support of the increment while 1,172 polls were not in support. Thereafter, the second proceeding of the  virtual meeting resumed after a long break, in which two motions were introduced. 

The first motion raised was, “The results posted on the Honourables groups should be readopted” while the second motion raised was,“The results on the group should not be used”. Following this, 23 Honorable members were in favour of the first motion while 14 supported the second motion. 

Regarding the particular amount, the basic dues should be increased to, 17 Honourables were in support of Hon. Qudus’ motion to increase the basic dues from N3000 to N3500 while 24 Honourables were in support of Hon. Oduola Peter’s motion to increase it from N3000 to N4000. 

Nevertheless, Honourable Jokomba Quyum made a plea if it would be feasible for the Council of Hall Chairpersons and Council of Faculty Presidents to accept N3500 from students due to financial difficulties. 

Twenty-four members voted in support of the Basic Dues increment to #4,000 and 17 members voted in support of #3,500. Based on the Council’s votes to increase the Basic Dues, speaker, Rt. Hon. Shoge Quadri, announced that the basic dues should be increased from N3000 to N4000. The meeting ended around 10:40 PM and was officially adjourned.
