SABI GIRL TAKES OVER: THE STARR ‘S EFFECT
By: Osuolale Oluwatomilayo
Just as Nigeria cannot be mentioned without a few people in mind, it cannot be mentioned without its music. It is what we are known for. A major characteristic of Nigeria aside from the work of our heroes' past, is the amazing music we produce.
Surely, our music has evolved continuously from old R&B to hip-hop to Amapiano.
The amazing music we have cannot be discussed without a few people. Especially the Gen-Z musicians, making the best out of the worst.
Looking at one of the most recent internet sensations, not so recent since she has always been such a star, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, is a twenty-two-year-old renowned Nigerian artist with top ranking, billboard songs.
Like her name, her talent in music is like an undying star. This is no surprise that many girls wish to be and look like her. With a face card like that, you just can never go wrong.
Alongside with other members, she is signed to Mavin’s record. Don Jazzy, with an eye for undiluted talent, picks them and helps them make a career out of what they have. Almost all trending artists with beautiful works have been attributed to Mavin's record.
Even the likes of Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, Dija, Dr Sid, Wande Coal, Reekado Banks, and Iyanya were once members. At least we all remember Dorobucci, Adaobi and Jantamanta. It was quite a season with those songs. Now, the new stars are showing us what they are made of. Her beautiful voice, fashion that seems to be appealing to the girls of this generation, charisma and Grammy-worthy albums make her stand out amongst ladies of her age group. Her record-breaking album “19 and Dangerous” earned her more fame and admiration. Who is not a fan of Ayra Starr? Who is not a Sabi girl?
This week at the University of Ibadan, Ayra Starr decided to grace the school with her presence and the enthusiasm and excitement were not under-expected.
As usual, she delivered what was ordered, getting the entire crowd to scream at the top of their lungs, ignoring all other activities that should be tended to and most importantly, getting the supposed “alpha males” to drop their guards is by no means a small feat, either way, it could only be sabi girl or rather “Agent of darkness” as religious activists called her.
The cash price that was given for the “look-alike contest” got every girl on her toes. The miniskirts in the crowd could not be numbered, each got shorter as the party went on.” Raise it till you make it”.
If the men had been permitted, they too would have some interesting outfits to share.
Elucidating why miniskirts were the trend that day should not be difficult, as earlier mentioned, her” fashion that seems to be appealing with the girls of this generation” consists majorly of short skirts and tops that could barely cover an arm. Is this a flaw to her perfection? No! Every artist is unique in whatever way they choose to be.
Although, it was said that the show lasted for a lesser time than expected due to a cold she had, this did in no way affect the outstanding performance. Thirty minutes should be enough to get it all going. If anyone is stopped to ask about their expectations and what they got, the answers would remain the same: “Spectacular” “Amazing” “Thrilling”. It is just t
he Starr’s effect.
