BRYMO - THE PRODIGY
By Osuolale Oluwatomilayo (Duchess)
The Nigerian music industry is incredibly vast with talented individuals of all ages believing there’s room for everyone to shine. They strive to gather a massive following, boosting their chances of winning prestigious awards like the Grammys.
In Nigeria’s thriving music industry, artists aim to build a large audience, increasing their odds of winning international awards. This mindset drives the industry’s growth as musicians seek opportunities to showcase their talents. With various genres like Afrobeat, RnB, hip-hop, Highlife, and Fuji, Nigeria’s music scene offers something for everyone. Let’s look at the millennial musicians like 2Baba, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Wizkid, Olamide, Asa, Brymo and many more. Their contribution to R&B and afro beats cannot be undermined and their continuous evolution is notable.
Brymo has been an astonishing vocalist and independent musician since 2013 under no record label. He was formerly an artist under the Chocolate City record label and surprisingly has many nominations and awards to prove his music brilliance and expertise. He has recorded several beautiful songs that have warmed the hearts of many. Songs like Ara, Heya, Ba’nuso, Olanrewaju, Afeedufaana and many more brought him not just fans but also loyalists. He has one of the greatest fan bases in Nigeria but even then, it is no rumour that he has begun to lose his amazing touch.
Brymo’s criticism of Burna Boy’s music has sparked differing opinions. Some view it as pride, others as self-respect, while many remain quietly loyal to his cause. Since September 2023, Brymo and Burna Boy have been at odds following Brymo’s scathing remarks, labelling Burna Boy’s work as “unoriginal” and “fake.” As a result, several celebrities and fans have lost interest in Brymo, questioning his choice of words and perceived superiority complex, which relegates others to inferior status: a status far below his.
Furthermore, 2Baba's infamous one-billion-naira defamation lawsuit against Brymo in November 2021 - filed despite allegedly orchestrating a physical attack on him - is noteworthy. 2Baba's history in Nigerian music is marred by endless quarrels and disagreements with colleagues, continually rewriting his legacy.
Brymo had a show earlier this month on the 2nd of November 2024, at Lagos State, the event did not go as planned. At the end of the show, his “loyalists” complained of his tardiness and recklessness during the show. There were complaints that a show that was to start at 7 pm started at midnight and even then, he presented for only about 30 minutes with only a few songs. They were angered at his nonchalance and his refusal to be accountable for his actions led to a series of banter online. All this sums up his supposed lack of regard for his fans and passion. Given his reputation and history of excessive smoking and drinking, many predict his career will be short-lived. His moment of fame has already faded, further giving rise to these con
cerns.
