On Monday, July 29, 2024, the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ibadan hosted a Distinguished Personality Lecture at Trenchard Hall, featuring Major General Garba Ayodeji Wahab (Rtd), Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja. The lecture focused on how the military and academia can collaborate to advance national development.

Professor S. O. Oyetade, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, hosted the event. Major General Obinna Onubogbu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division Nigerian Army, served as the special guest of honour. Professor K. O. Titled “The Military and the Gown: Forging Partnerships for National Development,” the lecture explored how military and academic institutions can enhance education, research, and security. Major General Wahab stated that he did not view one field as superior to the other but saw himself as “a referee between the military and academia,” aiming to foster a more developed community.

In recognition of his contributions, Major General Wahab was awarded for his insightful speech and valuable support for education and research.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Professor N. O. Fashina, Head of the Department of English, followed by the recitation of the school and national anthems.
