FUN FACTS ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN



 

1. The Department of History did not produce any first-class graduates until 69 years after its inception.

2. Love Garden is officially known as the Gamaliel Onosode Park.

3. UI Assembly Hall also known as Trenchard Hall was named after a colonial tyrant, Hugh Trenchard.

4. The University Obafemi Awolowo’s hall is the largest hall of residence in West Africa.

5. Independence Hall was officially opened in 1961 to commemorate Nigeria’s newly gained independence.

6. RT. Hon. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was the first chancellor as well as the first visitor of the University of Ibadan.

7. Professor Kenneth Dike, whom the Kenneth Dike Library was named after was the first Indigenous vice chancellor of the university.

8. The origin of cultism can be traced back to the University of Ibadan. The first confraternity group was formed in 1952 by seven friends known as The Magnificent Seven.

9. Ransome Kuti Hall used to go by the name Hall Three, after Kenneth Mellanby Hall and Lord Tedder Hall.

10. While it is widely believed that the University of Ibadan had three faculties at inception, historical documents prove that there are four founding faculties. The four faculties are Arts, Science, Medicine, and Agriculture. However, many did not consider Agriculture as a faculty because it had only two students.
