Your Skin Care Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide II (Night-time

Your night-time routine should be all about treatment and giving your skin what it needs. This is because the skin naturally repairs itself at night. If the skin looks dull, exfoliate; if it is irritated, hydrate and protect. Here is the best order of the use of skin care products to follow to ensure the skin receives the benefits of each product:

STEP 1: (DOUBLE) CLEANSER

This step is important in getting rid of dirt, oil, and makeup. Some experts recommend removing makeup first with facial wipes before cleaning the face with a gentle cleanser. One can also try double cleansing. This involves using a cleansing oil first to dissolve makeup and then cleaning the face again with a regular cleanser.

STEP 2: TONERS, ESSENCES, AND BOOSTERS

Most people like to use various types of skin care boosters such as mists, essences, beauty waters or hydrating (hyaluronic acid) serums. These are infused with different active ingredients, but the main purpose is to hydrate and nourish the skin. Most of these are however lightweight. They should be applied in the same manner as toners.

STEP 3: EYE CREAM

Asides from addressing dark circles, eye creams also protect the eye area from other skin care products. It is important to apply eye cream before treatments to protect the eye area against potential ingredients that could irritate.

STEP 4: TREATMENTS, SERUMS AND PEELS

Like the rest of the body, the skin does most of its repairing, restoring, and regenerating during sleep. This is why most targeted skin care treatments are better used at night. Instead of layering up all treatment serums and creams, it is better to choose your evening treatment depending on the skin’s needs at that moment.

STEP 5: MOISTURIZER OR NIGHT CREAM

This is usually the last step in nighttime skin treatment. There are different moisturizers for both day and night-time. Night moisturizers or night creams are generally thicker and heavier and are designed to be absorbed for several hours. Moisturizer, particularly the heavier ones used at night, creates a protective coating on the skin to prevent water evaporation during sleep. Maintaining a high water content in the skin is essential for healing and maintaining healthy skin.
