A reminder
By: A'ishat Àkànó
Another year, another story, same body
365 days what do you hold
in your palm for us?
Days are like weird spirits;
They move in terrific ways.
While you count them,
they count your days.
My smile is with me
and so are my tears
I'll call on them,
these days, with
pain in my heart
or songs on my lips.
I'll carry this heavy load
I need not a cane
to remind me of yesterday
and the screams that shared its hours
My gold (wúrà) is home
And my mirror (dígí) right by my side;
A constant reminder that I am far from home.
