NON-PRESCRIPTION EYEGLASS: The New Trend

Gone are the days when glasses were considered unattractive. Today, they’ve become a trendsetting fashion statement. From cat eyes to jam jars, hipster to thick nerd and rimless eyewear, there are plenty of frames to pick from. It is not surprising that both men and women in recent times wear glasses even when they do not need to correct their vision.

But why wear non-prescription glasses? Unprescribed glasses (also called fake glasses or Plano glasses) are eyeglasses used as a fashion statement. Many people including celebrities and influencers have been donning non-prescription eyeglasses for decades, but the trend took off in the 2010s.

Non-prescription fashion glasses can add stunning colours to your looks. As a student, glasses without a prescription can make you look more studious and serious. Wearing glasses in the office helps you cultivate a more professional and refined style.

It is important to note that non-prescription glasses have zero corrective power. If you don’t have vision issues that require prescriptive correction, wearing non-prescription glasses shouldn’t be a problem - they will neither damage your eyes nor cause structural issues.

Some non-prescription glasses, such as transition lenses help to block damaging blue light – an action that is beneficial to eye health. One disadvantage is that cheap over-the-counter (OTC) glasses can often fit poorly and cause you unnecessary discomfort, while lenses may scratch more easily.

Here are a few benefits of non-prescription glasses.

  • Non-prescription glasses help to protect the eye from dust, direct sunlight, and computer radiation.

  • It can also be used as a fashion statement. Different looks can be created just by wearing non-prescription glasses. The fun part of it is that there is a variety to choose from. They are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours, and styles - which makes it easy to get something that matches your needs, and even your personality.

Due to the many choices to pick from, choosing a frame can be quite tricky. Some of the things to consider while making your choice are the shape of the face, skin tone, lifestyle, and personality.

The shape of your face will help determine which frame(s) enhances your look. For people with a round face, square or rectangular frames are very good choices. They help to enhance the face by making it appear slimmer and longer, adding balance to the round features. Rimless, round, and small frames on the other hand will accentuate the roundness of the face, making the face look even rounder.

Typically, frames that suit an oval face have a strong bridge, are wider than the broadest part of the face and are geometric in shape. It is advisable to avoid glasses that are overlarge and cover up more than half of the face as they will throw off the natural balance and symmetry of the oval face.

Eyeglasses that soften the angularity and sit high on the bridge of the nose look best on square faces. Oval or round eyeglasses will balance and add a thinner appearance to the angles of a square face. Angular and boxy eyeglass frames in contrast sharpen and draw attention to angular features, making a square face appear bulky.

Cat eyeglasses and oval frames are the perfect choices for a diamond-shaped face. The frames accentuate the cheekbones and other delicate features.  Boxy and narrow frames on the other hand should be avoided as they will accentuate the width of the cheeks and draw attention to the narrow features rather than enhancing them.

Frames that balance the width of the forehead with the narrowness of the chin are ideal for heart-shaped faces - eyeglasses with low-set temples and bottom heavy frame lines will add width to that narrower part of your face. Round eyeglasses or square eyeglasses with curved edges will help draw attention away from a broad, high forehead. It is advisable to avoid frames that draw attention to the forehead such as those with decorative temples or embellished tops.

Just as the shape of the face helps determine which frames look best, so does the skin tone. Skin tone sets the tone for high fashion frames. Select a shade closest to your skin tone. It is advisable to stay away from contrasting colours such as pastels if you have a warm skin tone. Instead, choose one of these - brown shades, gold or honey, beige, and olive green.

Pink or blue undertones are your forerunner if you have a cool skin tone. It is best to avoid colours that wash you out and instead reach for frames that are silver, black, dark tortoise, pink, purple, blue, mauve, and grey.

The role your lifestyle plays in choosing your frames should not be ruled out. Think about the activities you do while wearing your eyeglasses. When impressing the big wigs at the office, you can accessorize your business savvy with a sensible style.

The frames you wear can also say a lot about your personality. You can have a pair of glasses that showcase your fun-loving side on the weekends and a pair that emphasizes your get-down-to-business mood during the week. Choose a style to express your personality or have a small collection to easily pick from and alter your appearance to suit your mood.
