HOW THE CLIMATE/WEATHER CHANGE AFFECTS YOUR HAIR

Have you ever taken your time to notice what is affecting your hair sometimes? Have you ever noticed that a change in weather pattern can cause damage to your hair? Do you ask yourself if weather changes affect your hair health? Well, the answer is a resounding YES! According to hair experts, weather/climate changes influence your hairstyle as well as your hair strands. It is important to note that your hair-care routine might not bring much unless you arm yourself with the knowledge of the influence of the weather on your hair health. With this, let us examine how different weather conditions affect your hair.

The wind affects your hair by making it tangled and brittle. It also gives your hair a split end. In the Good Hair publication 2022, it was made known that wind can make your hair dry by enhancing the rate of moisture evaporation. This is why you lose more hair during the cold weather. Limer HTC article, July 13, 2020, gave a solution to this by encouraging people to keep their hair and scalp moisturized during the colder months.

You know, it is very easy to think that if wind/winter will damage your hair, then the humidity or warm weather will do the opposite. Well, that may not be the case at all times. Through humidity, your hair is exposed to natural dryness. Again, according to the Good Hair 2022 publication, if your hair strands are congenitally fine, the excess moisture that your hair absorbs would make your strands too heavy inducing a loss of shape and volume. And on the other hand, if your hair is thick, the moisture will make your hair expand and look frizzy. The heat can cause the hair to lose moisture and this causes it to become less fragile.

Another disadvantage is the exposure to Ultraviolet radiation. It can break down the molecular structure of the hair leaving it dry, lifeless, and stripped of its natural sheen. According to Good Hair publication, below the surface, UV radiation has mutating effects on the cell and causes oxidative stress. The inflammation alters the amino acids (especially tryptophan, cysteine, tyrosine, and histidine) in the hair shaft, degrades moisturizing lipids, and breaks down the melanin pigments that help protect hair from UV light.

A relatively and mildly warm climate condition with minimal humidity is the most conducive for healthy hair growth. But you might still be bothered about how you will manage your hair through harmful weather. There is not much you can do about it. But you can always follow the normal guide for hair treatment. And that means you should;

  • Follow a healthy diet.

  • Avoid using hot water during hair wash.

  • Partake in a routine of deep conditioning treatment.

  • Trim your hair routinely.

  • Cover your hair from damage caused by UV rays.

  • Use shampoo.

  • Avoid using excessive direct heat.
