ASUU, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN EXPRESSES DISPLEASURE THROUGH PROTESTS ON LECTURE FREE DAY

University of Ibadan lecturers protested on Monday, 28th of November, 2022 to show their displeasure at the Federal Government's half-payment policy. Earlier on, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared that its members would embark on a one-day protest across public Universities in Nigeria to agitate against the Federal Government's no-work, no-pay policy. In response to this, some Universities have embarked on a one-day peaceful protest to express their grievances against the half payment that resulted from the no-work, no-pay policy.

The University of Ibadan, on Monday, embarked on a protest rally shortly after a congress to sensitize her community on the ills and response of the Federal Government to the university system in Nigeria. At the congress, some speakers addressed the topic; “Enslavery of Nigerian Academics: A Plot to Kill Public Universities”. The congress started at about 10 am at the Faculty of Education lecture theatre. The speakers included Prof. Adedamola Aremu, former ASUU national treasurer, Barr. Femi Aborisade, national leader, Socialist Labour, Comrade Abbey Trotsky, Oyo State JAF secretary, and Comrade Adewale Adeyinka, S.U. President, University of Ibadan.

After the congress, the protesting lecturers and students moved within the campus with placards and sang to register their displeasure. ASUU Chairman, UI Chapter, Prof Ayoola Akinwole, who addressed students during the rally said it is a peaceful protest. He urged the Federal Government to fulfil the agreement reached with the academic union. Prof. Akinwole in his statement said,

“The present government is one of the most lawless governments Nigeria has ever seen. A government that does not obey its own rule, does not obey its court; this is a government that is merciless in meting out draconian policies on the working class. Our people say no to all these treatments.”
