ASUU ENDS NEC MEETING

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has concluded their emergency NEC meeting. The meeting ended some minutes after 12pm, November 11, after almost twenty hours of deliberations.

The FG was reported to have paid half-salaries to lecturers which resulted in many members of the union kicking against the unfair treatment. There were fears that the lecturers would embark on another industrial action but as of the time of this report, there is no news about an imminent strike. While the President of the Union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke is yet to make a public statement on the outcome of the meeting, there is news that the Union has decided to give the Federal Government more time. House of Representatives Speaker, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila wrote a letter to the ASUU convincing them to reject any move in the direction of another industrial action and instead look beyond the current government. His statement read;

" My position is that ASUU should look beyond the current government for a resolution of the impasse. We need to move forward. It should peep into the future, request social scientists among its members to randomly select a representative sample of potential electors from the voter register and gauge its opinion on a candidate likely to win the presidential election.”

He further promised to intervene in the matter and meet with Buhari to find a solution. The ASUU is hoping that at the end of his meeting with the President, something concrete and favourable would follow.
