The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced on Wednesday, 8th of October, 2025, that the Federal Government has entered the final phase of negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university unions in a bid to resolve ongoing disputes concerning welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

Despite the government’s assurances, tensions remain high within the academic sector. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, criticized the Ministry of Education for what he described as its persistent delay in addressing the core issues affecting university lecturers.

Barring any last-minute change in plan, ASUU has declared that its members across universities nationwide will commence a two-week warning strike starting Monday. The decision, according to the union, aims to press home their long-standing demands and draw the government’s attention to unresolved matters hindering the effective functioning of Nigerian universities.

The union emphasized that the strike action is a warning phase, urging the government to take prompt action to prevent a possible escalation into a full-blown industrial shutdown.
