Seals Cup Hosts Press Conference, Unveils Esports Plan

Today, May 31st, 2025, the Seals Cups held a press conference to talk about the first edition of Esports and its collaboration with Comic Convention. The conference took place at SRC Foyer, SUB and was attended by the UI SU Sports Secretary, Victor Kolawole, Convener of the Comic Convention, Adebayo Erivic, Lead for Media/Publicity, Williams Owoeye, and a representative from NBXAL, Rofiq Fehintola.
The welcome address was taken by the UI SU Sports Secretary, who stood in place of the Chairman of the Seals Cup, welcoming press representatives from various LPOs for the event. Following that, Mr Adebayo, the convener of the Comic Convention, proceeded to talk about the maiden edition of the Seals Cups Esports and upcoming events, which includes comic concepts such as anime, cosplay and cartoons. He also mentioned how these events were linked to Seals Cup to encompass optimal inclusion from the student body. He emphasized that people get to play these games on their mobile phones and online and not just on the field. He also added that cash prizes will be awarded to winners of each category.
It was announced that the Esports segment will feature five games which includes: Football, Call of Duty, EAGC, Chess and Free Fire. These games will be open to every UItes, including PG and DLC students for participation. The venue of the event is Trenchard Hall, where qualifiers will be based on faculties or departments. The grand finale is designed to feature 15 faculties, consisting of 75 players, one player from the 15 faculties for each of the five games.
A rally is scheduled to be held on the 7th of June where the students will be given a coupon for registration with 100% off. The date for the qualifiers are planned for June 11th, 12th and 13th while the grand finale will be held on June 14th. It was emphasized that external attendees will pay a sum of N1,500. Furthermore, the event will feature notable personalities from the gaming, animation and film industry, among others. The event concluded with the speaker highlighting that registration can be done through various departmental or faculty sport directors.
