Once Upon That Day
By Esther Arikanki
On that day when everything changed,
We didnt expect it to be this cruel,
When the sky did start to rain tears,
On this land which was once threaded,
When education wasnt even worth a penny,
And a students pride, not his teachers belly
On that day when everything changed,
We did expect that every champion's fate lay in hardwork and deligence,
Bought with sweat and resilience,
Until the tides turned,
When the sea bled its content,
And flooded the hearts of our dear leaders,
With a savory yearn for discontent.
Oh then did the price to pay for our right protest,
So in our naivety, we gather,
Hoping that it wont last, before resolution comes swiftly to rescue,
Not knowing that it just begun
With betrayal,
we saw our honest headmasters contradict their assembly pledges,
Right in our faces,
With hands wrapped with filty cashes,
And desks overflowing with bribes.
We paid no mind until it struck us hard,
Faced with added zeros on our tuition bills,
An increase that felt utterly unjust.
To the head of the school's desk,
We rushed to present our case,
Prepared to voice our concerns,
Only to be met with rejection.
The temple of justice had crumbled to bricks,
And we resolved to take a stand.
But all to no avail,
For a classroom once filled with dreams now deferred,
So now, we are not expecting change,
We are not expecting reduced education fees,
We are not expecting a bribe free sector,
Till that day when everything changes once more.
