Why Must the Celebration Come to An End?

Season’s greetings or perhaps, Exam greetings!

The holiday has been such a wonderful season of celebration, as we celebrate with the lives of the innocent chickens that have been laid down, the plates of Jollof rice that have been eaten to our heart’s content, and the quality time that has been spent with families and loved ones. This was possible for those who were fortunate to have gone home. For those who were not, I hope loneliness did not cloud you and that a semblance of festivity was seen and felt at your end.

Having engrossed ourselves in the world of this celebration, we hope for it not to come to an end. But then, time has a way of snatching any ounce of joy we have. It is like the universe is conspiring against us, as there is only a week left in this semester before the examination starts. We all wonder how time flies and how we have entered the tenth week. I mean when did we enter, that we are almost approaching exams?

It is quite shocking to know that even as the semester is short, coupled with activities, making it look like the semester has not yet begun, there are still some lecturers who have not begun lectures, while some are not yet done with their course outline at the 10th week. Who knows when they plan to start or conclude their lectures? Is it when it is a week before exams that the lecturers schedule endless online classes, at ungodly hours, that are not comfortable for the students or organise physical classes for students, who are meant to be reading and revising? When all is said and done, the exam will be held, whether we like it or not. Students reassure themselves with their usual slogans “Everything go dey alright”, and “Last last, we go run am”. In the end, who are we to question the First and Best?

The short semester is one all students battle with. The days pass by so quickly that one imagines if lectures have begun. For some students, they see no ray of hope as they want to write their exams and get it over with, it is like their escape from jail. While others are secretly plotting their dangerous academic comeback for the next session, with full intensity. Just as they did this semester, but maybe, this time around, it might come to a reality, who knows?

Unaware of the fact that another week from the short 11-week semester has slipped away, students have taken it upon themselves to accord themselves an unofficial break, not authorised by the school management. I mean, why wait for school approval, as some students have lost themselves during the semester? They see this as an opportunity to rejuvenate and recover. It is a one-leg-in, one-leg-out thing.

At the end of the day, there are still some students who will ace their exams, leaving everyone in doubt wondering how they managed to do it, while some will not. In the end, it is not the result that matters, but how you have been able to survive the craziness of the short semester.

Irrespective of how glamorous education may seem, it is not an assurance of a secure future but an avenue out of the many, one can explore. In the light of it all, happiness and life are all that matter. When all is considered, it is all about you. Surviving a short semester is a hustle  on its own.
