Queenites Express Their Disappointment on The Recent Pilfering of Clothes

One of the dreadful feelings is when you find yourself living among people whose minds and behaviours are unpredictable.

It is bad enough to be surrounded by a lot of people from different family backgrounds and cultures and you must learn to cope and understand them but what is worse is you having to deal with the situation of theft amid people that are supposed to be a family.

The situation has been going on for a while now and the Queenites now wash their clothes in fear and stay alert to observe their clothes.

Victims and others have one or two things to say about the situation.

   Koyinsola

“The missing clothes issue is serious, I wash clothes in total fear all the time, and because of that, I don't spread my important stuff, like caps, and socks, for my practicals.

My suspects would be the cleaners, but then I wouldn't blame them entirely because their situation might call for it which they need to survive, also, students among us give them clothes to wash, which makes it hard for anyone to approach them when they are removing clothes from the lines, since it might be for the person that gave them the job.

Jennifer

“I felt disheartened and sad when I went to remove my clothes from the lines only to discover two of my favourite tops were nowhere to be found, ever since then I got discouraged from washing my clothes again.

It's not actually fair because we are all girls and everyone understands how expensive things are these days, why would I have spread my clothes in fear? I wish to go back in time after washing the clothes. I could have just taken them away from the block, maybe it would not have happened”.

Benita

“The situation of missing is a thing of much concern to all, people keep making the same complaint all the time and the solution is not yet determined, in my opinion maybe people should start monitoring their clothes after spreading them until it is dried, then maybe security cameras would have assisted a bit if they were active, then it can be a bit easy to trace a set of clothes because if one person was recorded spreading a particular set of clothes then, of course, it should be investigated if a different person is recorded removing that same sets of clothes from the same spot”.

Abigail

“My cargo trousers just suddenly disappeared from the clotheslines, what amazed me most was that the clothes were wet when the person took them.

I searched everywhere thinking maybe someone had shifted the position to another line, all to no avail. It is very painful to discover a favourite part of your clothes missing without any proper explanation.

I tried to calm myself about it but I was deeply hurt, I just couldn't cry. At every interval my memory flashes back to the day I washed the clothes, and I regret washing them there or should have gone to a Staylite block to dry my clothes on the lines”.

 Jumoke

“Losing my clothes to an unknown thief felt traumatising, especially brand-new clothes, I felt I washed the clothes at the wrong time, spread them at the wrong place.

Clothes that I've been saving up for a long time now, but at the end of the day I could not even use them, it's an awful experience, right I feel threatened to wash again because of the fear of Losing more clothes”.

 Norah

“I'm not a victim of the topic discussed but that doesn't exempt me from becoming one, I wash clothes in fear every damn time, my valuable clothes are not included when I spread clothes I've never left my lab coat outside after washing, I'll rather take it and other important things up my room, hang them until they dry, it's better safe than never”.

   Esther

“I don't even think the portal is doing anything to help, the cleaners are my closest suspects because my roommate once caught them when her clothes went missing and in the search for them, she found them in one of the cleanser loads under the staircase, which was a thing of bafflement and totally out of context”.

   Abigail

“I'm a first-hand victim of this issue, it was really painful, I was folding my clothes into the box only to realize that my favourite blue jean skirt was nowhere to be found, I went back to the spot where I dried the clothes and found nothing there, it was painful, which is very unfair knowing the cost and the limited clothes one has”.

  Heritage

“My Jean skirt was stolen, what is funny is that I caught someone wearing the skirt, I did not just see it but was very sure it was my skirt, but then what could I have done? The power to do something was not within my reach, and besides how do you even approach someone on such a matter?”.

    Deborah

“ On a serious note, the issue is getting out of hand, it has become more of a regular habit, and something should be done about it, I once caught someone from my room window who removed a red cap and other few clothes from the clothesline and put it under the top she was wearing, why hide it if it was yours? The scene was a suspenseful one but then I had no proof, if only I had made a video of the person from upstairs”.

Joanna

“I decided not to wash my clothes in this hall again ever since my clothes were taken, now I pack all my dirty clothes home to wash, during weekends because I can't afford to lose yet another clothe, in my observations the cleaners are my main suspects, because I with my friends once caught a cleaner removing many clothes randomly from the lines into her ‘ghana must go bag’, the issue is that it's hard to challenge them, firstly because of the communication barriers, secondly because people also give them clothes and plates to wash, one can't tell if their innocent or not, why even give cleaners such a job when they are dry cleaners in the hall?”.

    Prevail

“It's heartbreaking to take time to wash your clothes only to return later and find out the clothes are gone, not just any clothes but the most high-quality clothes, four of my clothes were taken, they returned three and kept one.

In my defence I reported the case to the portals and one of the portals told me what she was to do about the matter. Her only advice to me was that the next time I wash, I should keep watch of my clothes till they dry before I leave the spot, I mean how is that even possible? I wish the person would get exposed”.

   Robia

“How would it take my precious time and strength to wash clothes then boom! The next moment they went, my underwear was stolen and I couldn't do anything, it was annoying, I couldn't wash my outing clothes in the hall again same with the other people, they took underwear, towels and all the other expensive clothes, it got to a point when what they do is dismantle someone's clothes from the lines to the floor and then take the rope away.

I really hope the hall executives can help us reach out to the hall wardens for measures to be taken”.

   Goodness

“They stole my yellow jeans, till now I can't find them, and it has affected my fashion sense each time I remember the dress code.

I think the suspect is or is dealing with kleptomania, an impulse control disorder that results in an irresistible urge to steal due to a

psychological trauma”.
