Maintaining Menstrual Hygiene in School

 By Christopher Peculiar

Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) refers to how women and adolescent girls manage their menstruation. Proper MHM involves having the knowledge and resources to handle menstruation effectively and hygienically. This includes using clean materials to absorb or collect menstrual blood, maintaining good hygiene, and having access to facilities for washing and disposing of used menstrual products in a dignified and environmentally friendly manner.

For schoolgirls, managing menstruation can be particularly challenging, especially in a shared environment like a female hostel. However, with the right knowledge and practice, you can stay healthy, comfortable, and confident during your period. Here's how:

Understanding Menstruation

Menstruation is a natural process that occurs as part of the reproductive cycle in girls and women. It signals the body’s preparation for a potential pregnancy. Typically, menstruation lasts 3-7 days, with the flow varying from heavy to light.

Tips for Managing Your Period

Here are essential tips to help you care for yourself during menstruation:

Use sanitary products

Use sanitary pads to absorb menstrual flow.

Change your pad every 4-8 hours to prevent leakage and reduce the risk of infections.

Practice good hygiene

Always wash your hands before and after changing your pad.

Bathe or shower regularly to keep your body clean.

Wear comfortable clothes

Choose loose, breathable clothing to avoid irritation and stay comfortable.

Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water to help ease cramps and flush out toxins.

Eat nutritious foods

Consume foods rich in iron, calcium, and fiber to alleviate symptoms like bloating and cramps.

Exercise regularly

Engage in light physical activities such as yoga or walking to relieve cramps and improve your mood.

Get adequate rest

Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep to help your body recover and manage physical and emotional stress.

Safe Disposal of Sanitary Products

Proper disposal of sanitary products is crucial, especially in shared spaces like hostels, to maintain cleanliness and prevent infections. Follow these steps:

Wrap used pads

Wrap used sanitary pads in a plastic bag or newspaper to contain them.

Use designated bins

Dispose of wrapped pads in the designated bins provided in your hostel or restroom.

Avoid flushing sanitary products

Never flush sanitary pads, tampons, or applicators down the toilet as they can block pipes and harm the environment.

Managing menstruation in school requires proper planning and attention to hygiene. By following these tips, you can maintain your health, confidence, and comfort during your period. Always prioritize your well-being and make your menstrual hygiene a top priority.
