The Ongoing Renovation of Queen Elizabeth II Hall
By Arikanki Esther
"A female abode should feel safe, comfortable, and inspiring." This sentiment is one shared by many students highlighting and expressing their response as Queen Elizabeth II Hall embarks on significant upgrades to these vital living spaces. The impacts are felt not just in the aesthetics but in the overall well-being of the residents.
The renovations in female hostels are comprehensive, focusing on enhancing safety, security, and convenience. From the removal of torn and tattered nets to the repair of old and dusty woods, each improvement aims to create an environment that nurtures academic and personal growth and hygiene.
With the installation of advanced solar-powered panels, students have expressed a newfound sense of security regarding illuminations in their living spaces. "Now we are assured of security when we go to wash our dishes and clothes in the night as a result of the improved lighting" shares Omolara and her friends.
Sophia, a third-year environmental science student shared her enthusiasm: “It’s amazing to see our school taking such a proactive approach to sustainability. The solar panels not only save money but set a precedent for future initiatives and projects.
In addition to energy efficiency, the renovation includes the removal and replacement of torn and tattered window nets. This is particularly crucial and important for ensuring comfort and safety within the hostels. Old and damaged nets can lead to issues like insect infestations and reduced ventilation. The new nets promise to enhance the overall atmosphere within the hall." Our rooms look much better than before. “It looks more welcoming" stated a resident.
Students have voiced their relief, appreciating the fresh and safe environment that the new nets provide. Ayo, a second-year student, remarked: “The old nets were a nuisance! I remember when we had a rat and mosquito invasion in our room because the side of our net was open it was so devastating. Now there's proper ventilation and I no longer must deal with mosquito threats". "Closing our room door was a hassle, we had to close it severally before it eventually closed but now, we close it with ease" exclaims excitement Aishat, a 100level student.
To further support the needs of the residents, the renovation project also involves the incorporation of more water tanks. This addition addresses water shortages and ensures a reliable supply for daily use. Enhancement is particularly important in fostering a conducive living environment, especially during peak usage. “Having access to clean water is essential. The addition of drink-only tanks that are hygienic has been helpful, especially during days when I'm financially buoyant to afford 100 naira worth of sachet water or even buy a bag of water” exclaims Princess, a 300-level student.
However, female residents still dive in anticipation of more renovation. An anonymous student voiced her opinions, stating that in addition to the ongoing project, which is an applaudable one, she will also be pleased if there is the availability of WiFi for the hall which can and would serve as a source of internet connection for student residents. (I don't know if this would do)
The combined efforts of these renovations are set to create a lasting impact on the female hostels. With a focus on sustainability, safety, and accessibility, the project not only aims to improve the living conditions of students but also encourages a culture of environmental responsibility. As the renovations continue, the response from the student body remains overwhelmingly positive, reflecting a shared vision for a brighter, greener stay
on campus.
