The 67th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will honour the best recordings, compositions, and artists chosen by the members of the Recording Academy on February 2, 2025. Nominations were announced through a YouTube livestream on November 8, 2024.
Beyoncé received eleven nominations, making it the highest, followed by Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, Kendrick Lamar and Post Malone with seven each. With a career total of 99 nominations, Beyoncé became the most nominated artiste in Grammy history, breaking a tie with her husband Jay-Z. Taylor Swift has made history as the first woman to earn seven career nominations for Album of the Year. "Now and Then" by the Beatles is the first song composed with the help of artificial intelligence to be nominated for a Grammy. At 100, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter became the oldest nominee ever; he was nominated for Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording.
Nigeria's Afrobeats stars are assured of a comeback at next year's Grammy Awards, after winning a clean sweep of nominations for "Best African Musical Performance".
February's ceremony will mark the second time the category has been awarded, and this year's debut saw Nigerian talent pushed aside by South Africa's Tyla. South Africa's Tyla and her song "Water" beat four Nigerian artists to snatch this year's African performance Grammy, but she has no nominations for next year's awards.
All five tracks in the running next year are from Nigeria or performed with Nigerian artists, guaranteeing big revenge.
This week's nominations were for "Higher" by Burna Boy, "Love Me JeJe" by Tems, "MMS" by Asake and Wizkid and "Tomorrow" by Yemi Alade. The fifth song on the list is Chris Brown's "Sensational", on which the American artiste is accompanied by Nigerian performers Davido and Lojay. This has left Nigerians in excitement because this is the second time Davido has been nominated for a Grammy. Lekan Osifeso, Lojay, Yemi Alade and Ahmed Ololade, Asake also bagged his first Grammy nominations.
Temilade Openiyi, Tems, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, Burna Boy, and Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, Wizkid are the only singers that have won a Grammy.
Tems became the first Nigerian singer to win a Grammy in 2023 after she co-wrote Rihanna's "Lift Me Up" for the soundtrack of the movie "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever". Tems has received three nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards, bringing her career total to eight nominations. Wizkid won a Grammy Award for his featured work in Beyoncé's The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack with "Brown Skin Girl" while Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album award for his album ‘Twice as Tall’, a first for a Nigerian as a solo artist in 2021. This nomination makes Burna Boy the first African to have six consecutive Grammy nominations in six years.
Adeleke Davido was nominated for the 2024 Grammy Award but lost to a song titled Mammi Water. This makes fans think he is in no way close to the Grammy not to talk of perceiving it. This has caused controversy between the 30bg gang and Wizkid FC.
However, some think Yemi Alade has the chance of winning the award as she is a threat to Wizkid, Burna Boy and Tems since it's her first nomination and was nominated unexpectedly when it was least expected.
In addition to Tems nomination in the 2025 African performance category, she is also shortlisted for "Best International Album", as is fellow Nigerian Divine Ikupor, Rema for his album ‘HEIS’.
Final round voting will commence from December 12, 2024, to January 3, 2025, ahead of winners being revealed during the Grammy Premiere Ceremony and telecast on February 2. Till then we can only cross our hands and see who will bring home the prize. The fact that only Nigerians are nominated for the Best African Musical Performance makes it obvious that the award is ours.
May the best win!
