Unveiling Hidden Gems: Exploring Underrated Fields of Study in Nigerian Universities

In Nigerian universities, certain fields of study are often perceived as mediocre or relegated to the background, deemed suitable only for those who couldn’t secure admission into more prestigious courses like Law, Medicine, or Pharmacy. However, this misconception couldn’t be further from the truth. Fields like Human Kinetics, Linguistics, Art and Social Science Education, Adult Education, Special Education, and other education-related courses are not only vital but also in high demand overseas.

Despite their importance, students in these fields face undue criticism and bias, with some viewed as having settled for a lesser option due to poor performance. This misconception stems from the limited job prospects in Nigeria, leading many to believe that graduates in these fields are unemployable. However, the reality is that these courses require dedication, hard work, and a passion for making a difference.

Ironically, some students strive to transfer to more “prestigious” faculties like Law or Medicine to impress parents or feel a sense of accomplishment. However, many in this category are driven by different motives. While some do this to impress parents and significant others, others have a genuine passion for a particular field of study. In a conversation with Miss Olabisi, a former Arts education student who transferred to the Faculty of Law, she talked about her motivation for leaving education to pursue a Law degree. She said, “Law was my first choice. I didn’t get in because of the cut-off mark.” This points to the fact that societal expectations aren't the sole driving force; passion and genuine interest also play significant roles.

This trend underscores the misplaced emphasis on status over substance, especially in educational courses, and the root cause is not difficult to discern unemployment. Many graduates in these underrated fields opt for careers in business or other sectors due to the poor remuneration for teachers and lecturers in Nigeria.

Despite these challenges, it’s essential to recognize the value of these courses and the critical role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future. Without dedicated educators, the entire education system crumbles. It’s time to acknowledge the timeless excellence in these underrated fields and encourage students to pursue their passions without reservation.

These fields offer diverse career opportunities abroad, and Nigerian graduates in these areas are in high demand. For instance, professionals in Human Kinetics are sought after in sports management and therapy, while Linguistics experts are valuable in language consulting and speech therapy. Special Education professionals are needed worldwide to support inclusive learning. Miss Wunmi from the Department of Early Childhood Education underscores the importance of her course of study, saying, “The work of early childhood educators focuses on the holistic development of every child from birth to 5 years. This is crucial because a child's foundation matters greatly. We also collaborate closely with UNICEF to ensure comprehensive child development and educate parents on nurturing care…”

Moving forward, it’s crucial to reassess our perceptions and create opportunities for students in these fields to excel. By promoting academic excellence in underrated courses, we can produce top-notch educators and professionals who will drive positive change in Nigeria and globally.

It’s important to acknowledge the unsung heroes in our educational system and recognize that every field of study has its unique value and contributions. There is indeed light at the end of the tunnel, and by embracing these underrated fields, we can unlock a brighter future for all.
