Tributary Screening of "Ebrohime Road" Honours Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka

On Thursday, July 11, 2024, the Thursday Film Series, in collaboration with the Department of English, the University Media Centre, and IFRA-Nigeria, organized “A Tributary Screening of Ebrohime Road” at the Drapers Hall, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan. This event was one of many organized worldwide to celebrate Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka.

The event began with a pre-screening at 3 PM, followed by the main screening at 4 PM. The documentary, written and directed by Kola Tunbosun, highlights Soyinka’s years at the University of Ibadan, focusing on his deep connection to Ebrohime Road, where he lived with his family in the 1960s. It also covers his experiences during the Nigerian Civil War, his imprisonment, and the celebration of his release.

Attendees included Chief Mrs. Olayide Soyinka, Wole Soyinka’s wife; Tunde Kelani, the documentary’s cinematographer; Professor Sola Olorunyomi, a lecturer from the Department of English; as well as university staff and students.

Towards the end of the event, a panel session featured Chief Mrs. Olayide Soyinka discussing modern student and youth activism. She remarked that “the youth are doing like the youth have always been.” The event concluded a few minutes before 7 PM with a photo session.
