STUDENT REACTIONS TO UI SU'S DIRECTIVE ON SCHOOL FEE PAYMENT

By Marvelous Joseph

The hike in school fees for the 2023/2024 session has significantly stirred concern and weighed heavily on many students' hearts. To ease the financial burden on students, the Student Union of the University of Ibadan issued a directive advising students to delay payment of school fees, stating they would engage in discussions with the school management regarding the fee increase. However, since the meeting, there has been no feedback from the student union on this matter.

Let's survey the sentiments of students regarding the SU directive, which has affected their perspective:

"I initially supported their decision to discuss fee reduction, but now I'm undecided because we haven't received any updates beyond the initial directive. It would be reassuring to hear about progress with the management. It gives us hope for potential action." - Alisher

"I believe if every student holds off on paying, it will send a strong message to the school management that we stand united with the SU's decision." - Anonymous

"If they can make a difference, that would be great. Last year, we waited in vain for any action." - Victoria

"They should keep negotiating, and the school should extend the fee payment deadline. Without an extension, nothing will change." - Fiyinfoluwa

"I think it's just politics; nothing will come of it. People are already paying, and we can't rely on the SU when the deadline is approaching." - Victoria

"Hopefully, the union will take meaningful action." - Zainab

"I don't think anything will come of this fee reduction issue. If the deadline remains, there's little hope for change, which is disheartening for students." - Onagheochi,

"On this issue, the SU's approach is disappointing. Many freshmen have already started paying, and the SU is keeping our hopes up despite likely inaction." - Anonymous
