Interview With Adekunle Iyanuyimika, the Vice Hall Chairperson: Queenites Belong to A Community That Supports and Cheers Them on To Shine Their Brightest.

On the 29th of July, QEHP correspondents interviewed the Vice Hall Chairperson on her roles, accomplishments, challenges, and expectations of Queenites from her office.

QEHP: Good evening, Miss. Iyanuyimika.

Iyanuyimika: Good evening, ma’am.

QEHP: Can you tell us about yourself?

Iyanuyimika: My name is Adekunle Iyanuyimika, popularly known as Angel. I am a 300-level student at the University of Ibadan, studying Science and Technology Education. I serve as the Vice-Hall Chairperson of Queen Elizabeth II Hall. Outside academics, I am a creative artist, passionate about various art forms.

QEHP: Can you describe some of the key responsibilities of your role as Vice-Hall Chairperson?

Iyanuyimika: As Vice-Hall Chairperson, my key responsibilities include resolving complaints, assisting and supporting the Hall Chairperson, supervising activities, providing leadership, and representing the interests of hall residents.

QEHP: What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in this position, and how have you overcome them?

Iyanuyimika: One major challenge has been managing conflicts and representing diverse interests. I address these challenges by maintaining objectivity. Staying organised and meeting deadlines has also been challenging, but I manage this by prioritising tasks and focusing on one thing at a time. Organising tutorials was initially difficult as it involved going door-to-door. To alleviate this, I began sending online links for tutorials, which reduced stress and avoided the need for frequent door-knocking. Overcoming self-doubt has been another challenge, but I’ve worked hard to maintain confidence and execute my plans effectively.

QEHP: How do you prioritise and address the needs and concerns of the residents in the hall?

Iyanuyimika: I use a multi-faceted approach to address the needs and concerns of hall residents. This includes holding regular meetings, conducting one-on-one sessions for support, and managing the help desk to resolve complaints. These strategies aim to enhance the overall experience for Queenites.

QEHP: Can you share any significant achievements or projects that have been accomplished during your tenure?

Iyanuyimika: During my tenure, I have organised regular tutorials (2-3 times weekly) for general courses across GES, the Faculty of Arts, and Law. I established an accountability forum, The Noble Nexus, to support Queenites' personal growth and foster a sense of community. Additionally, I have addressed and resolved complaints effectively, even when they were outside my direct jurisdiction.

QEHP: How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your duties as Vice-Hall Chairperson?

Iyanuyimika: Balancing academic responsibilities with my role involves prioritising empathy, understanding, and inclusivity. I collaborate closely with hall management to address initiatives and concerns while promoting resident engagement through opportunities for socialising and community service.

QEHP: What are your goals for the remainder of your term as Vice-Hall Chairperson, and how do you plan to achieve them?

Iyanuyimika: My goals include:

1. Organizing an entrepreneurship program to empower Queenites with innovative skills.

2. Improving stakeholder engagement through regular feedback sessions and inclusive decision-making processes.

3. Expanding tutorial programs to support academic success and provide additional resources.

4. Building a strong sense of community by fostering connections among residents and promoting a culture of belonging.

QEHP: Any final words for Queenites?

Iyanuyimika: Dear Queenite, remember to always strive to showcase your strengths. Carry yourself with grace and confidence, keep your head high, and maintain poise. Aim to be the best version of yourself and remember that you belong to a community that supports and cheers you on to shine your brightest.
