SILENT DISSENT: THE UNTOLD IMPACT OF POLITICAL APATHY ON SOCIETY

 By: Abraham Favour Olohigbe

Politics, deeply rooted in history, has evolved, varying in its manifestations across regions. Its influence, ranging from family dynamics to societal governance, is undeniable. Efficient functioning, I believe, hinges on political engagement, a force that, when wielded correctly, aids societal growth. However, the complexities of power struggles within politics can unleash pandemonium, greatly affecting individuals. Recognizing this, it becomes essential to explore the spectrum of political participation, acknowledging that not everyone embraces politics in the same manner, which may be based on different experiences or backgrounds from which they emerge.

Often, those labelled as politically apathetic face judgment, deemed odd or troubled. I do not agree with this notion; I believe that political participation spans a spectrum from high engagement to apathy. The belief that one cannot be entirely apathetic holds; that individuals are inevitably entwined in political dynamics in various ways. A gentle push, coupled with education, can illuminate the path toward active political participation. My background led me to the lane of political apathy, born into a family where politics was perceived as a hazardous game, instilled a deep-seated apathy. "Politics is a game of dirt; don't play it," I was warned. Over the years, this caution became a foundational brick in my wall of political disinterest. I sometimes even scrunch up my face at the slightest talk of politics, and when you hear it from my tongue, it rolls off acid-filled, gingerly spiced with hatred.

Delving into the reasons behind political apathy reveals a myriad of valid concerns. From the questionable ethics of certain politicians to the exposure of sordid details in the corridors of power, the backstage of politics paints a grim picture. Instances of rigged votes and individuals securing positions through connections rather than merit breed frustration. Witnessing the ascension of ill-mannered figures lacking human empathy to positions of power further dampens enthusiasm for political engagement. When politics becomes a force that inflicts more harm than good on society, shattered hopes follow in its wake and ruin the structure of the society's foundation.

In some societies, a lack of transparency ignites political apathy; people remain uninformed about the actions taken by active political participants, undermining their belief systems. A vital bridge between political leaders and the public is missing, leaving citizens disconnected and disillusioned. The people begin to lose their belief in the political system and begin to find solutions to some societal problems by themselves.

Addressing political apathy requires a detailed approach. Rather than dismissing apathetic individuals, society must strive to understand the valid concerns that lead to disengagement. Education plays a pivotal role; shedding light on the positive impacts of informed political participation can reshape perceptions. Initiatives to enhance transparency in political processes and hold leaders accountable can rebuild trust. Though some shady businesses in the corridors of power cannot be completely eradicated, they should be reduced to the barest minimum.

In conclusion, the spectrum of political participation encompasses both fervent engagement and apathy. Rather than stigmatizing those disinterested in politics, fostering understanding and offering enlightenment can pave the way for a more politically engaged and informed society. Recognizing the legitimate concerns behind political apathy is the first step toward creating a system that truly serves its people.
