UI SU Water Tanks Cleaning Ritual
On
the crisp morning of Saturday, 27th January 2024, the University of Ibadan
Student Union (UI SU) continued its tradition of sending male students to
various halls for a cleanup mission of washing water tanks. The A block tanks
took the lead in this exercise in Queen Elizabeth II Hall, commencing at 9:03
am.
The cleanup ritual kicked off with the draining of water from the A
block tanks in Queens Hall, as the designated student cleaners prepared for a
hands-on approach. Clad in determination, they entered the emptied tanks and
began the washing exercise. Queenites were asked a night before to fetch enough
water so as not to disturb the washing exercise.
This tradition, a well-established routine for the UI SU, has male
students bringing a lively twist to an otherwise mundane task. The cleanup crew
also brought a speaker to infuse the atmosphere with a merry vibe. As the
lively tunes played, the washing continued.
One notable aspect of this recurrent event is the collaborative spirit
among the students. Some members of the cleanup crew stayed outside the tanks,
ready to lend a helping hand if their comrades inside required assistance. This
combination of teamwork and tradition has transformed the routine task of water
tank cleaning into very unique exercise.
The UI SU's commitment to maintaining healthy student
living remains
and this year, as it was done last
semester, the storage tanks in the hostel were scrubbed clean to ensure that the
water that Queenites used was safe.
