STUDENT UNIONISM: ADDRESSING THE COMPLEX CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME
The student union is perhaps the most effective tool in the welfare of the student body in any university in Nigeria. The union, like the name implies, is a united front, a united voice. It is necessary as student’s opinions and concerns can be heard. Student unions build student influence and strong unions can cause change in policies and influence decisions that are going to be made by the university management, especially those that could directly influence the welfare of the students.
THE RELEVANCE OF THE UNION
A student union losing its influence or its
power is a serious cause for concern. This means the union cannot adequately
cater to the needs of the student body. The power of the union lies in the
fact that it represents the interests of the entire student body. This means
when the union takes a stance or makes a demand that it is the stance or the
needs of every student in the university.
When the union loses its influence, there
is no one to speak on the student’s behalf. Their needs and interests are
brushed aside and there is no one to speak for them at the negotiation table.
This is a trend that can be seen in several Nigerian universities. Students are
informed that engaging in protests (peaceful or otherwise) is grounds for
expulsion. Peaceful protests are the most widely used and effective way to
take a stand.
Nigeria’s annual inflation rate rose to
28.9%, the highest it has been since 2005. Everyone in the nation felt the
heat, Nigerian students even more so. There was a sharp increase in goods and
services on campus (in some cases there was almost a 100% increase). The cost
of intra-campus transportation rose without warning, with some student vendors
charging up to N50 for every bank transfer, regardless of the amount being
transferred. The student union, in this case, spoke
and negotiated on behalf of the student body.
CONSEQUENCES
OF HAVING NO UNION
This brings to mind the protests against
the school fees hike that rocked the University of Lagos. The university does
not have an active student union. Federal universities in Nigeria increased the
fees. The student unions in different universities negotiated on behalf of the
students. In UNILAG, there was no union and so the students had to speak for
themselves. And when they spoke, and the entire nation heard their voice, the
university listened and reduced the proposed fees.
The need for a stronger union in Nigerian
universities cannot be over-emphasized. After all, it exists to ensure the well
being of its members.
Students must be sensitized about the
importance of the union and why it is there to serve their interests. The strength of the Union and the
student body relies heavily on the active engagement and understanding of the
student body. A well-informed student body is better equipped to understand the
need for a strong union in their
university.
Collective
responsibility and individual engagement are the cornerstone of a strong student
union. It requires an understanding that the union's strength lies in the
active involvement of every student, each contributing their unique talents and
perspectives. By embracing this collective responsibility and engaging as
individuals, students not only strengthen the student union but also cultivate
a vibrant and supportive academic environment that enhances the overall
university experience.
