LOYALTY OVER MERIT: THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF GODFATHERISM ON A STATE

The phenomenon of godfatherism is presented as a force that shapes the very system of governance. Godfatherism, with its origins deeply embedded in alliances, connections, and economic dependencies, has developed into a network of political nepotism that extends its tentacles into the very core of democratic processes.

Godfatherism in politics refers to a system where influential and powerful individuals display significant control over political processes, often manipulating the selection of candidates, influencing policy decisions, and determining the direction of a political party. This phenomenon is widespread in various regions, raising questions about the health and integrity of democratic practices.

Godfatherism typically finds its roots in a combination of political, economic, and social factors. Historical ties, familial connections, or financial support often contribute to the rise of a political godfather. This informal network can extend its influence from local politics to the national sphere creating a web of patronage and dependency.

One of the most visible effects of godfatherism is the shaping of candidate selection processes which poses a significant threat to democratic values. Rather than a merit-based system, candidates may be chosen based on their allegiance to their godfathers. Qualifications, leadership skills, or dedication to public service may no longer apply. This undermines the democratic principle of selecting leaders based on their ability to effectively represent and serve the interests of the public. Hence, this trend can undermine the democratic principle of fair representation which can foster a culture of corruption, inequality and nepotism.

Godfatherism can succeed in denying individuals the opportunity to shape the decisions that affect them.  It has the ability to fracture democratic ideas and principles and render the populace powerless. In Nigeria for example, we see issues ranging from  unemployment   problem,   deplorable   roads,   and transportation   problem,   miserable   infrastructures, poor medical services and educational standards, epileptic power supply and a ton of many others that can partially be attributed to the   concept of godfathers who collaborate with their godsons to siphoned resources meant for the overall infrastructural development of a country.

Furthermore, Godfatherism, if not managed, can lead to a situation in which the said godfathers and pioneers determine in all elections who compete, who wins,  who  get  nominated  to  positions  or  who  gets  appointments. It can also  result in  the  turning around  of  our  national  priorities to favour their  own  personal   interest  and  thereby  making  the leaders less representative and less responsive to the yearnings of the citizens.

In addition, it is also important to note that many   of   our   unemployed   youths   are   being   lured   through   the   activities   of godfatherism into committing acts of political violence and thuggery through promises of employment or other  forms of  illegal benefits that may never come to reality at the end. Many electoral violence can be traced to some youths' interest and choice to display allegiance to their Godfathers.

In conclusion, it is important to understand that to safeguard democratic values, there must be a collective effort to reform candidate selection processes, increase transparency in policy-making, and foster a culture of accountability. Only through such comprehensive strategies can societies hope to break free from the shackles of godfatherism and nurture a political landscape that truly reflects the will and interests of the people.
