EVOLUTION OF NATURAL HAIR AND IT'S TREND AMONGST STUDENTS.
The
evolution of natural twists has involved modification, diversification, and
natural selection. In time past, natural hairstyles and trends have differed
from media Influences,climate and the
society. Hair has long been a critical part of Black History. Natural
hairstyles like cornrows, lots and afros have been an expression of our culture
years back. That said, ideas deeply rooted in Westernism and Eurocentric have influenced
how the representation of our culture has evolved. Smoothed, straightened and
relaxed hair became desirable and this is evident we have seen in history.
Black people assimilated to this way of life
Hairstyles
have historically represented social class and political stance according to
"Hair it is". This has translated to the distinction between the
Western society and Black features as
lower economic status. Black hair is still seen as untamed, wild. This hasn't changed but natural
Black hair is evolving.
Presently,the
care and styling of Black natural hair has become common amongst students.
Various salons and beauty supply stores
cater solely to clients with natural afro textured hair.Afro textured
hairstyles include plaits or braids, twists. The twists can include basic
twists which can be modified into dreadlocks by allowing the hair to weave
together and by also applying some products to make them stick together and
last longer.
Natural afro textured hair can also be styled into "Bantu knots"which involves sectioning I the hair into box or triangular patterns and fastening it into tight buns or knots on the head. This knot can be made from either loose natural hair ,a twisted one and even from dreadlocks. Natural hair can also be worn in cornrows or from a countless variety of styles.
Another beautiful way of styling natural afro hair is by parting into different sections and style into a perfect buns. Thus buns have been recreated synthetically cause of the beauty looks it give. Styling and packing natural hair can be done in many pretty and artistic patterns.
Social media
has greatly impacted and mobilised people to natural hair movement that became
widespread for various reasons. The inspiration for going for natural hair
differs from different individuals. The decision of some is declaring their
Black girl Magic as the case may be.
Many
discover the versatility of this beauty from other women do it first. One
example of this,is the Fulani hairstyle tribe. The hairstyle was brought into this
modern age. They braid their hair into what looks like modern dreadlocks
decorated with beads and cowrie shells.
One of the
factors that also influenced students mostly considering natural afro
hairstyles is the cost of attaching things to hair at this present time. The
cost of attachments and the workmanship is the fear for some to start with.
They are not willing to go the salon to spend expensively on these things.
For
some the decision is finally rooted in
embracing and declaring their blackness. Many have also gone natural for health
and environmental purposes. Some are
also focused on natural hairstyles particularly twists which serve as protective hairstyles and can be carried for
long period of time without getting worried on when to loose it. Natural
hairstyles are non conventional, attractive and fashionable lifestyle to be
embraced.
