Disruptive Announcement Sparks Controversy in Queens Hall

In the midst of a seemingly ordinary day at Queens Hall, a disturbance occurred that left many residents both bewildered and frustrated. The incident revolved around an announcement made by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Student Union, in conjunction with his team, regarding the upcoming Seal’s Cup.

On the evening of Thursday, 28th September at approximately 6:00 pm, the Queens Hall premises witnessed an unusual spectacle. Traditionally, announcements had been made discreetly at the back of the block, ensuring minimal disruption to residents. However, this time, the approach was notably different. The PRO and his team arrived at Block H armed with a blaring loudspeaker, its music blaring at an intrusive volume. The abrupt intrusion was met with a mixed response.

As the announcement unfolded, it became apparent that the timing was far from ideal. By this hour, most classes had concluded for the day, and Queenites were seeking refuge in their rooms, yearning for a reprieve from the day's demands. Some residents were taking precious moments of rest, others were busy preparing their evening meals, and a few were diligently studying for their academic pursuits.

"I had to rush to put on my hijab," were the words of a resident in H Block, first floor.

Between 5 to 6 pm, classes had likely ended in some departments and faculties, and Queenites were returning to their rooms to rest after a stressful and sun-filled day. For many Queenites, their rooms and the floor they lived on were considered safe spaces. However, this sense of safety was violated when the SU PRO, along with his team and the Hall Chair, came to Block H with a loudspeaker playing music loudly to make their announcement. Upon inquiry, it was revealed that some Queenites were sleeping, others were cooking, and some were even studying.

One Queenite on the floor had to take medication after the intruders left because her heart rate could not be controlled, and she feared that her blood pressure had risen due to the disturbance that woke her from her sleep.

Another resident of the floor expressed that “the act was uncalled for and found it quite displeasing that the Hall Chairperson was part of it.”

Almost all the Queenites present at that time on the block expressed great displeasure with the disruptive medium used for the announcement.

One Queenite also expressed dissatisfaction with the Hall Chair's inability to prevent such an act, saying, "The Hall Chair was present and couldn't stop him; they must have given their approval for the floor announcement."

A Muslim resident added that she now had to start wearing her hijab even in her room, as anything could happen at any time. In the hall, information is crucial because Queenites need to be aware of the activities happening in the hall, from electricians' repair schedules to upcoming events and activities.

Another resident of the floor suggested that the SU PRO should have been reasonable enough to lower the volume of the music on the floor because the noise was quite annoying.

When residents came out to express their displeasure, the SU PRO apologized and moved to the other end of the floor for his announcement.

In conclusion, the disruption caused by the Dean's Cup announcement in Queens Hall highlights the importance of effective communication and the need to consider the peace and comfort of residents. This incident serves as a reminder that while information is vital, its delivery must be thoughtful and respectful of the community's environment.
