THE UNCOVERED TRUTH: FROM MODESTY TO EXPOSURE
By Otokpa, Ruth Edu.
It is undeniable that the
transformation of women's fashion throughout history serves as a compelling
testament to the ever-shifting landscape of human culture. Fashion, extending
far beyond mere attire, emerges as a potent medium of self-expression. It mirrors
our societal values, individual identities, and historical backdrop. The
journey and evolution of women's fashion across the ages have not only molded
individuals but have also left a profound imprint on our world, exerting
influence over the female gender and the global economic stage. Nevertheless,
within the dynamic realm of fashion, the interplay between self-expression and
societal norms looms large.
While
fashion has traditionally been a conduit through which individuals,
particularly women, assert their identity and creativity, a contentious issue
has surfaced in recent times: the trend of women exposing their bodies in the
name of fashion.
Upon
a closer examination of this subject, it may intrigue you to know that this
matter extends beyond the realm of clothing. It serves as a reflection of our
evolving perspectives on femininity, autonomy, and the agency that women
possess in navigating the ever-evolving world of fashion.
In
recent years, the fashion industry has borne witness to a shift in trends and
designs that have pushed the boundaries of body exposure. From provocative crop
tops to thigh-high slits, plunging necklines, and body-hugging dresses, these
styles deliberately draw attention to various parts of the female form,
particularly the thighs, cleavage, legs, and other sensitive areas. For many,
choosing these garments represents an act of self-expression and empowerment.
However, have we considered how these trends contribute to the objectification
and sexualization of women, reducing their value to physical appearance rather
than character, skills, or achievements?
Furthermore, young girls and women may feel pressured to conform to these trends to fit in or be deemed attractive. This pressure can lead to the development of low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy, resulting in a lack of self-confidence and a negative self-image. With the pervasive influence of social media showcasing these trends, harmful comparisons, and envy can arise as individuals measure themselves against unrealistic beauty ideals.
Have
you also contemplated the safety implications of these so-called fashion
trends? In 2019, a survey conducted by the Africa Rolling Institute (API) and
Minders Advancement Initiative across six tertiary institutions in Lagos state
revealed that 63% of undergraduates in the state attributed indecent dressing
to incidents of sexual abuse. While this is by no means a justification for
such abuse, making clothing choices that prioritize comfort and well-being can
contribute to a safer and more respectful environment for women.
Additionally,
many cultures and religions emphasize modesty in attire as a way of respecting
traditions, religious doctrines, and societal norms, particularly in our
beloved Nigeria. When revealing fashion trends become prevalent, they can
undermine these values and give rise to a sense of cultural erosion or the loss
of tradition. Clothing often holds religious significance, with modest dress
being prescribed by religious doctrines as an expression of humility and
devotion. Therefore, disregarding these values can be viewed as a direct
challenge to one's faith.
In conclusion, as women, we must
recognize that while fashion serves as a potent form of self-expression, it
should not come at the expense of personal well-being, safety, or cultural
respect. Striking a balance between personal expression and acknowledging the
potential negative consequences of certain fashion trends is essential to ensure
a more inclusive, equitable, and harmonious society.
