SRC'S 10th ASSEMBLY ELECTS THE SPEAKER AND PRINCIPAL OFFICERS.


On Saturday, 8th of July, at the Senate Chamber, following the swearing in of the executive and legislative arm of the union earlier in the week, the 9th assembly was dissolved by the speaker Rt. Hon. Olatoye, after which she proceeded to moderate the election for the new speaker.

The speaker called for nominations for the position of the speaker of the House. Two candidates were nominated for the position of the Speaker of the House, Hon. Olamide Omotunde a student of Medicine and Surgery from the Alexander Brown Hall constituency and Hon. Gbenuola Oluwole from the Faculty of Law representing Queen Elizabeth Hall II Constituency.

An election was overseen by the speaker of the 9th assembly, Rt. Hon. Olatoye with each member of each constituency present called to vote as well as the faculty presidents present at the sitting.  A total of 114 votes were cast.

Hon. Olamide Omotunde emerged the winner of the election with 57 votes, Hon. Gbenuola Oluwole had 55 votes and there were two void votes. Hon. Olamide Omotunde, who emerged as the speaker of the 10th assembly then held the elections of the principal officers of the House. 

The speaker nominated Hon. Arewa-Jesu Akinwusi for the position of the Chief Whip of the House and she was elected by a majority vote of 47 out of 62 honourables present.

Hon. Moyinoluwa Inubile, a 300 level student in the Faculty of Education and a representative of Independence Hall Constituency was nominated for the position of the Deputy speaker and was elected by a majority vote.

Hon. Odu Faith, a representative of the Idia Hall Constituency was nominated as the clerk of the House and was elected with a majority vote of 70 out of 96 Honorables present.

The Speaker concluded the meeting by asking the Honourable to set aside their differences following the election and work together for a successful tenure. The meeting ended at 6:37 PM.
