JAW WAR 2023 OPENS WITH THE FIRST ROUND OF HALL CATEGORY

 


Jaw War 2023, one of University of Ibadan’s most anticipated programs started yesterday, April 11, 2023. The first round of the event which was originally slated for 10 April 2023 was postponed at the request of students who stated that the Easter break would prevent them from attending. The debate has two categories, the Hall category and the Faculty category, where participants in both categories would battle.

The first round of the hall category involved Kuti Hall, Queen Idia Hall, Bello Hall, Queen Elizabeth II Hall, Lord Tedder Hall, Zik Hall, Mellanby Hall, Alexander Brown Hall, and Independence Hall.

The event started at 5:30 pm with the recitation of the National Anthem, the University and Jaw War Anthem, and the introduction of speakers. Each hostel had two speakers with the first speaker speaking for five minutes and the second speaker speaking at the rebuttal stage for three minutes. 

The speakers for each hostel include Awo Hall- Oláníyì Anjola (First speaker) and Ojo. Kuti Hall- Tofunmi Ishola (First speaker) and Morakinyo Damilayo. Queen Idia Hall- Jose Oluwakunmi (First speaker) and Oguntade Eniola. Bello Hall- Barnabas Michael (First speaker) and Ugochukwu Chineke. Queen Elizabeth II hall- Anita Babs (First speaker) and Dooshima Ande. Mellanby Hall- Akinyare David (First speaker) and Mong Victor. Lord Tedder Hall- Aweda Bolaji (First speaker) and Olajide Bolaji. Zik Hall- Ebenezer (First speaker) and Tijani Abdulkabeer. Alexander Brown Hall. Independence Hall- Tiolulope Salami (First speaker) and Adebayo Abdulrahman.

The topics debated on a range of socio-political issues in sports, corporal punishments among children, network neutrality, value-based health care model etc. The speakers were judged based on their appearance (5 marks), content and facts (30 marks), delivery (20 marks), persuasiveness (20 marks), refutation (10 marks), keeping to time (5 marks), and structure and organisation (10 marks). The judges in attendance include Prof. Yemi Ayede, Dr Demola Lewis, and Dr Tella.

At the end of the event, the results were as follows:

Idia - 65.2% vs Indy – 66.83%

Queens - 59% vs Zik – 65%

ABH - 63.83% vs Kuti-67.66%   

Tedder - 66.83% vs Awo - 65.67%   

Mellanby - 69.33% vs Bello - 75.12%

Micheal Barnabas, a Sultan Bello speaker was announced as the best speaker of the first round with 77.67% as his overall percentage.
