UI SU AND HEALING LABS BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES HOLD MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID SEMINAR

 



On December 10, 2022, Healing Labs Behavioural Sciences in conjunction with UI Student Union organized the Mental Health First Aid program themed ‘Emergence’. The program was held at the Large Lecture Theatre of the Faculty of Arts and began at noon. The program was organized to educate students on the importance of stress management in the everyday life of a student.

Many notable speakers came to speak at the event, including Professor B.O Olley, a Professor of Clinical Psychology from the Department of Psychology. He spoke on the skills necessary to manage stress and encouraged students to prioritize their tasks for the day and do only the most important ones. He encouraged them to delegate responsibilities to others and participate in recreational activities they are passionate about.

Ms Beatrice Mokwunyo, a 400-level student from the department of Psychology - one of the organizers of the program - gave the opening address, stating that she thought the program was necessary if only because of the rise of suicide rates in the country and all over the world. In her speech, she said that she strongly believed that stress played a huge factor in these figures and that necessitated the need to learn stress management.

Other speakers include Damilare Oluwasegun who provided comic relief. He emphasized the importance of good rest and social interaction as well as self-discipline and a healthy reward system. There was a meditation session by a yoga specialist, Martina Edogbo. Kingsley Chukwuma, the President of the Faculty of Social Sciences spoke on relieving stress through goals. He discussed how setting goals was instrumental to the success and stress-free life of a student.

Other dignitaries that graced the event were the UI'SU Vice-President, Miss Zainab and the Assistant General Secretary of the union. Other speakers include Adeolu Iterogba, Samuel Adebayo and Kunle Pelemo.
