NNAMDI AZIKIWE HALL HOLDS ANNUAL COMMON POT FESTIVAL

On Saturday, 26th November 2022, residents of Zik hall famously known as Zikites held their common pot festival. The festival is a long-time tradition that has been in existence since the establishment of the hall in 1963. It is done three times in a session; the first and second semester, and the Ewa night that holds at the end of the session.

According to tradition, Zikites are required to contribute foodstuffs no matter how little, which would be cooked and distributed among themselves. This tradition aims to foster the spirit of togetherness and brotherhood among Zikites by eating from one pot.

The event started at around 6:30 am, with committee members going from one room to the other to campaign and ask for food items from all Zikites. Donations such as a bag of rice and half a bag of beans were contributed. The beans were put in a large tray from where members of the hostel picked them. They also solicited support from passersby to help pick the beans. The gyration started around 4 pm while the cooking began at 6 pm after firewood had been gathered. As customary, the food was shared after the Hall Chairperson gave his opening address. Apart from Zikites, residents of other hostels joined in the festivity and it is estimated that over 700 people were served that day.
