FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE HOLDS SENSITIZATION PROGRAM ON INSECURITY WITHIN AND OUTSIDE THE CAMPUS

In response to the increase in insecurity within the country, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine held a sensitization program titled; ENLIGHTENMENT INTERVENTION ON CURRENT SECURITY SITUATION. The event took place on November 24, 2022 at the faculty auditorium and started at 12:13 pm and ended at 2:00 pm. The event was organized to sensitize students and share security tips and strategies that can be used within and outside the University. The program was opened with a speech by Professor Ola-Davies, Dean of the faculty, who described the event in her own words as one that was needed to create awareness on ways to mitigate insecurity at this time.

The guest speaker, Dr. Sybil Olufunmilayo Akinfenwa, a retired commissioner of police, was invited for the event and she spoke of her experiences and the cases of insecurity she witnessed while in service. She further gave tips on self-preservation and protection.

“Check for a few things before letting anyone into your home such as where the individual is coming from, their background and their relationship with people.”

Students were advised on how to open the door even during daylight. They are to identify the caller before opening the door and in cases where they are suspicious, they should call the police. When walking, she advised that they should walk in groups and not alone, most especially when taking shortcuts. She also implored that they should pay attention to their surroundings and hold their identification card with them always.

When travelling unfamiliar routes, Dr. Sybil recommended seeking professional advice to avoid dangerous routes. She also mentioned that it is important not to socialize with an unknown crew; in her words, “This is not the time to mingle, open your eyes, and don't socialize yourself to death. Be careful of the people you mix with. Free food, free money! Better be very careful.”

Present at the program was the former Dean of the faculty, Professor Oyeyemi, the Deputy Dean of Students, Dr. Aiki Raji, and HODs of other departments, staff, and students.
