ASARO WITH FISH

ASARO is a fast-cooking and delicious one-pot meal. It is made from white yam cooked in stock to a fluffy or should we say marshy kind of texture. It is also known in the English language as Yam pottage. The modern method way of cooking this Yam pottage allows different ingredients to be added to it. ASARO is a very easy food to cook, and no joking, all you need to do is dump your ingredients in a pot and mash them all together.

What do we need?

 Yam

Vegetable oil or Palm oil(depends on your choice)

                 Onion

                 Fish

                 Crayfish

                 Fresh green vegetables

                 Red bell pepper (tatashe)

                 Scotch bonnet pepper(ata rodo)

                 Seasoning

                  Any additional ingredients to taste

How to make it

  • Peel and cut yam tuber into preferred sizes. Wash the yam cubes and place them in a pot that you think would contain all your food ingredients.

  • Wash and blend the pepper and onions and set aside.

  • If you'll be using dry fish, add salt to the body then soak it in not-too-hot water for a few minutes. This removes any microorganisms in the fish. Then you can remove the bones in the fish.

  • Start to cook the yam on mediums heat, make sure you pour enough water on top of the yam. If you are using very dry fish, it is advisable to add it before you add other ingredients.

  • Let the yam cook properly, after, add the onions, pepper, palm oil, crayfish, stock cubes, and smoked fish.

  • Cover the pot and continue cooking till the yam is done.

  • Add salt, seasoning cubes, and other ingredients.

  • Add the green vegetables, stir/marsh, and leave to cook for about 10 minutes. Marsh the yam together to your taste. Some will not like to have any yam cubes but I'll to still have my yam cubes.

  • Some will like to take their Asaro with pepper stew, if you are one of them, please go ahead to make your stew and partner it with your Asaro.

  • Serve and enjoy.
